Melted Rainbow - Susan Kimball

Hi guys! I don't know what got into me today but I've been thinking about melting crayons and making some art with them. I read online things to do with kids (staying safe) and decided to throw caution to the wind and experiment.
I picked colors I likes, broke them up, put them individually in dixie cups and microwaved them. I almost had a fire at one point, spilled molten crayons on the porch floor and spread toxic crayon fumes through the house. I think I got rid of the urge to work with melted crayons.
I poured the melted mess onto a sheet of broken glass I had laying around and then photographed 2 of them-one on black material behind the glass, another on a similar colored watercolor I did years ago and one on the scanner looking at the piece from behind.
What do you guys think? I'm done with this but dreamt about another image that I might tackle next.

  1. I just love that you did this Susan. Nice to see one of us branching out into 3-d! Glad that you did not have to burn down your place for your art! I like the one with the black material best. Looking forward to your next image...

  2. Actually I love this! I had been thinking of doing something related, but haven't gotten to it yet - I'll fall into the "slacker copycat" roll. ;-) I had been thinking of crayons and hot plates - not as three-D, but I do want to try something. I really like all of these, but am most drawn to the added dimension of the one on the watercolor background. Keep on playing, it's great and inspiring to see.

  3. Thanks so much you guys, if you haven't noticed I took out my colored pencils after both of your art. I have to say this blog has been so helpful to push me past my fear. I haven't done art on a daily basis for many years.

I appreciate the feedback and not sure if I like these but am glad I did something different. Now my artroom smells like crayons too. Think I need to air it out.

    Thank you both so much!

  4. Susan, Your colored pencil drawing was really great - you definitely should play with that more at some point.

  5. This is amazing! I'm not usually a fan of abstract art but you've really got something here. You're very talented.

I'm hoping my own blog will help me to write something every day, in the same vein of you painting, drawing etc every day.

    Best of luck to you!
